First Person Shooter Heaven

The sorry state of first person shooter (FPS) games over the past year or two meant that I didn’t really have the urge to “splash the cash” on many games recently. This changed last week with the release of four amazing titles in the space of a week.

  • Far Cry (PC): Put mildly it is one of the best FPS in a long while that has held my attention for more than a few levels or maps. Fighting through expansive environments such as desert islands, cryogenic facilities and a large jungle research centre reminded me of playing Half-Life for the first time many moons ago. Add to this the large array of vehicles such as boats, buggies, 4×4s and trucks and you have an amazing story line with an open ended feel. Definitely one of the best titles of 2003/2004
  • Unreal Tournament 2004 (PC), after last year’s instalment I wasn’t holding too much hope for this year’s version but decided to make the purchase when Play.com offered it for £17.99 before a £7.50 rebate. This year’s version offers vehicles both on land and air, plenty more maps and game modes. Considering it only cost me £10.49 (after the rebate) it was definitely worth the money and I think I’ll still be playing this online for quite a while yet.
  • Raven Shield - Athena Sword (PC) is the first official add-on pack for Raven Shield. As with most titles that carry the Tom Clancy brand, the action is based around a tactical method of play. For me any game based around the Rainbow Six / Raven Shield platform is always going to be a winner.
  • Splinter Cell - Pandora Tomorrow (Xbox) is yet another title that carries the Tom Clancy brand, and very much like the first Splinter Cell this one doesn’t disappoint. Massively based around stealth and gadgets this year’s version has Xbox Live multiplayer capabilities that help extend the action and make this no longer a single player game.

Now all I need is for Half Life II and Doom III to be released this Summer.
