Normal Service will Resume Shortly

I just wanted to post a quick note to say that normal service will resume shortly. I’m currently working my way through several assignments for Uni that seem to be taking most of my spare time. The last one gets handed in on Thursday, so expect things to return to normal around here pretty soon.

I’ve also been working on a redesign which is about 60% complete, so as soon as the assignments are out of the way I’ll get back to finishing that too.

Oh, and I expect my friends and family are not going to be seeing much of me for several weeks, and it’s all because of this and this and the release of Half Life 2 - Damn, why does the games industry do this to me?.

Ah isn’t university life fun. What year are you in at the moment? I’m busy with a few assignments, noticeably my final year project, which’ll be concentrating on web standards as you already know!

Oooh, Half Life 2… only a few more hours until Valve push the “big button” and allow used to use their already purchased or downloaded versions of the game. Halo 2 should be good, but I’ll have to wait til a PC version comes out, until then I’ve got GTA:San Andreas to keep me happy for a while!

We should get a student web standards pub meeting going, like all those in Australia and the other UK developers have been doing!

    Trov,

I’m currently in my 3rd of 4 years (HND then Degree course), and have just handed in my Digital Imaging & Video assignment. I still have to hand in Database Theory & Practice and my HND Project this week - I’m currently waaaay behind on the Database Theory & Practice stuff.

I’m hoping to get my free Half Life 2 (I bought an ATI 9800XT) and was promised a free copy of HL2 when released. I’ve still not heard from ATI though.

I’ll be up for a meetup as soon as I get this work out of the way… but I don’t want it to be elitist like the London one where only the bigger name bloggers and the other BritPack people get invites. Aren’t we all part of this game?

  3. Colly

Hey, last thing we want to be is elitist. You and other bloggers from our island are part of a bigger plan which you may or may not wish to be part of later on. It’s easier to get balls rolling with just a few brains around the table. The main reason we all meet up is because we work together on projects, or are already friends. Nothing sinister with us lot. We’re Brits, thus nice guys. I assure you…

Hey Chris, What University are you at?

  5. Chris

Sorry Simon, I didn’t mean it to come across as me being bitchy. I appreciate the reasons you have for having all the usual invitees.

I’m feeling stressed at the moment and I think its coming across in my writing… so, my apologies.

Ian, I’m at the North West’s “newest” university, the University of Bolton. Where you at?

  6. Colly

No probs, Chris. To be honest, it wasn’t the usual invitees. Big John Oxton was new, and I’d only met the others via phone if at all. It’s all quite flexible, but kept small to keep discussion focused. I wouldn’t rule out more open, agenda-based meet-ups in the future.

Oh, and don’t get too stressed. I’m wound up like mad at the mo, but there’s always good stuff around the corner…

Chris, I’m still at college. University next summer though. I’m still deciding which Uni to go to. I’ve talked to Paul and he’s sold me Huddersfield…I’m proberly going to go there. Are you at Bolton institute?

  8. Chris

Yes, except its now a Univeristy and soon to be called The University of Bolton (more info.

FYI, this is the course I’m doing.

Regarding choosing a University, be sure you’ve checked out all the tech courses at a few of the Universities before you choose. Also, if you can, be sure to attend as many open days as you can. Don’t just go off one recommendation, as if things don’t work out, then its a PITA to move uni’s and courses.

  9. Trovster

I’m at the glamerous University of Bradford. Ok it doesn’t sound great but the course is ok. The course I’m doing EIMC IPD, ok so enough of the abbreviations… that’s the Electronic Imaging and Media Communications department, and the course is Internet Product Design

It’d be good for a few people just to meet up and chill, nothing to formal but hopefully the conversation will turn web based. It’d be nice to meet up with other “young” web standards zealots!

  10. Ian Cox

Actually Chris I was looking at that course. It looked like it would suit me down to the ground. The thing was I printed off about 10 courses from University’s I’m considering and presented them to my current course tutor. He straight away moved Bolton Insistute to the bottom and moved Leeds to the top. I’ve talked to several people since and they all have said that they have heard bad things about Leeds, so maybe he was wrong about Bolton also. What do you think of your course and University? Which University’s did you consider? and why did you choose Bolton? I think I’ll have to take a trip to an open day and check it out.

  11. Chris

Trov, as I’ve said previously… I’m definitely up for a meet up with fellow bloggers sometime… but does 25 still class me as young? :)

Ian, I’ll follow up your question once I’ve got this assignment finished. :)

  12. Trovster

Hmm, see you’re hitting 25, not that’s getting past it in my book… nearer 30 than 20 and half way to 50. Harsh reality! Heh. Yeh, I suppose you’ll do!

We should arrange something in either Leeds or Manchester. Leeds is pretty nice. Should promote something and get a good gathering, I reckon they’ll be a few people up for it. I’m sure I can get one other guy from my course to join… Jamie Pittock is pretty up with web standards (he’s set me straight a few times!)

  13. Chris

Manchester is easier for me… but whatever… I guess I can find my way to wherever it is.

Would definitely have to be sometime next year though.
